Just an hour from the mainland, lies a 965-acre oasis of breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife that was once Henry Flagler’s Long Key Fishing Camp – luxurious enough to draw celebrities like newspaper magnate William Hearst and U.S. Presidents such as Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt.
But then came the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, laying waste to all that man-made luxury.
Now, though, it’s Long Key State Park, offering visitors a tranquil haven for birdwatching, swimming, kayaking or just relaxing. A vast network of mangroves, hardwood hammocks and a tidal barren are some of the rare sights that beckon.
