Next year, Florida first responders could gain a tool to secure public space to do their jobs – and potentially obscure onlookers’ sightlines.
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation enabling police, firefighters and paramedics to establish a 25-foot no-go zone around themselves. Anyone entering it after receiving a warning will face 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
Sponsors Sen. Bryan Ávila and Rep. Alex Rizo, Miami-Dade Republicans, said it’s about protecting first responders in chaotic situations.
Critics worry it’ll hinder recordings of misbehaving police. DeSantis had until April 25 to sign, veto or let the bill become law without action.
