The U.S. Department of Transportation is floating a $4.9 million grant to the proposed Cross-Bay Ferry route linking southern Hillsborough to MacDill Air Force Base.
The grant, announced by U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor last week, will be directed to the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority. The funding will be used to purchase a 350-passenger boat. The service currently operates on leased boats with less than half that capacity.
“It will grow a popular transit option between Tampa and St. Pete, reduce congestion, create local jobs, support small businesses and increase connectivity in the Tampa Bay region,” Castor said.
