During WWII, hundreds of Jewish gravestones in Poland were stolen and reappropriated. Polish photographer Łukasz Baksik documented how the gravestones were used to build everyday objects like fences, pavement and grindstones. Even today, they are used instead of regular stone in some instances.
In Matzevot for Everyday Use: Photographs by Łukasz Baksik, Baksik sought to start a dialogue about how people can live in the midst of relics of anti-Semitism.
The photography exhibit is on display at the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg now through Jan. 29. The museum’s showing is the North American premiere of the exhibit.
