Hillsborough High senior makes Olympic history

Erriyon Knighton of Tampa has already made history at the Olympic Games and the competition hasn’t even started. The 17-year-old Hillsborough High School senior became the youngest runner to qualify for the Games since Jim Ryun in 1964.

Knighton earned his ticket to Tokyo with a third-place finish in the men’s 200-meter trials.

He joined the Hillsborough track team as a sophomore to improve his speed for football, but soon realized he could accomplish bigger things as a runner. Last month, he broke Usain Bolt’s record for under-18s in the 200 meters

The Games will be from July 23 to August 8.
