St. Pete Wants Major League Soccer, But…

by

Nearly 90% of St. Petersburg voters want St. Petersburg to be home to a Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The May vote was a major boost for Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards’ efforts to persuade the league to award the team an expansion spot.

But does MLS want St. Petersburg? In the city’s favor:

1. It is the largest media market without an MLS team.

2. The team owner isn’t requesting tax dollars for stadium improvements.

3. Local enthusiasm.

However, at least one major hurdle remains. Edwards must find co-investors for the promised $80 million in stadium improvements.
