During the late 1980s, three young Floridian brothers in the Ray family all contracted AIDS after getting blood transfusions for their hemophilia. People were so afraid and so little was known during that time that they were barred from attending school. Two of them died young, but Randy battled AIDS for nearly 40 years, becoming a father and grandfather. He died in May of this year.
Last Friday, on World AIDS Day (Dec. 1), the Hillsborough County Planning Committee recognized and commemorated the battles fought by the Ray brothers and countless others and shared information about HIV prevention, care and education.
