Exhibits Examine Black Identity in American Culture

The exhibit “Black Pulp!” at the USF Contemporary Art Museum examines evolving perspectives of black identity in American culture. It positions contemporary artists’ works next to historical materials like the 1953 comic strip “Torchy in Heartbeats” by Jackie Ormes, the first African-American woman editorial cartoonist. “Black Pulp!” includes everything from magazine covers to digital prints.

Also on display is the exhibit “Woke!” featuring recent works by New York artists and “Black Pulp!” curators William Villalongo and Mark Thomas Gibson. The works in “Woke!” examine current cultural inequities and their reverberations through society.
