For both, it was the atmosphere surrounding the Rowdies in St. Petersburg. They could escape the celebrity status they experienced in Europe as their careers wind down, and still have the opportunity to play competitive soccer.
And, despite their mileage, the veterans aren’t slowing down. Cole, 35, has scored 15 goals over parts of two seasons with the club and Schäfer, 33, has played every minute of the 2017 season.
