Aside from being a world-class dance company, Ballet Hispánico also acts as a catalyst for social change. Tina Ramirez founded Ballet Hispánico in 1970 as a space for Hispanic dance and dancers to flourish. In 2020, the Ford Foundation honored Ballet Hispánico’s half-century of commitment to access, diversity and inclusion by naming the company one of American’s Cultural Treasures. The accompanying grant will be used, according to Ballet Hispánico, to further its efforts to elevate the cultural voices of black and brown artists.
