It was a weekend of firsts for Scott McLaughlin.
He backed up his first pole position by winning the Firestone St. Pete Grand Prix for his first NTT IndyCar Series victory. McLaughlin led the last 21 laps to hold off defending series champion Alex Palou.
“I’m exhausted,” McLaughlin said in a post-race interview. “What a day. I’m out of breath here. It was crazy.”
St. Pete was a winner, too. The 18th annual race along downtown streets was accompanied by perfect weather. Race weekend brought an estimated 150,000 people to the city and an economic impact of about $40 million.
