The meaning of the term “self-taught genius” has evolved over time, and it’s being reframed with an exhibit of American folk art on display now at the Tampa Museum of Art.
The exhibit features more than 100 artworks representing the 18th to 21st centuries. Pieces loaned from the American Folk Art Museum in New York range from the American flag painted on a wooden gate for the American centennial to a delicate white quilt sewn by female slaves in the 1800s.
“Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum” is on display through Jan. 16.
