Tampa Electric Co. was given the green light Thursday to raise rates to modernize its Big Bend Power Station and add solar power, a move meant to offset power losses from coal-powered plants the company is closing.
The Public Service Commission approved a $302 million revenue increase over three years, $113 million less than TECO had requested.
TECO customers will see an average increase on their bills of $16.50. Some of the increase is expected to be offset by lower fuel costs passed on to customers.
TECO provides electricity to more than 800,000 customers in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties.
