When you’re trying to convey an important point, take a breath. This is always good advice, but it comes in especially handy if you are speaking in public or doing a TV interview.
Pausing between statements gives the listener time to digest what you’ve said. It also slows you down, helping you enunciate.
And for TV interviews, there’s a bonus: If you take pauses, it helps the producer get soundbites. Dr. Michael Bennett of the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg used this approach in a Fox 13 interview, and you’d never know his comments were part of longer statements.
