Former Tampa Bay Rays ace Scott Kazmir was the winning pitcher for the U.S. Olympic baseball team Wednesday against the Dominican Republic.
Kazmir, 37, worked five innings in the 3-1 win by the Americans. He allowed two hits and struck out five. The U.S. plays South Korea on Thursday for a spot in the gold medal game vs. Japan.
Kazmir hopes to return to the major leagues after the San Francisco Giants released him on June 5.
He spent five seasons with Tampa Bay, compiling a 55-42 record. He also appeared in three postseason games for the Rays in 2008.
