The Hillsborough County Commission on Wednesday pumped the brakes on plans to begin the process of adding two commissioners to the board, which would bring the seven-member Commission to nine.
While the move, which would require a voter referendum, drew criticism from many on the left because it could benefit conservatives with single-member districts drawn by the Republican-controlled board, it was cost that ultimately led to the walk-back.
The special election the measure would have called for would have cost as much as $2.5 million, prompting Commissioner Michael Owen, a Republican who first floated the plan, to delay his push.
