Hillsborough School Board seeks clarification on book bans

With a flurry of new state laws on the books regarding public education, including how texts are selected for school libraries and what books are considered appropriate for students, Hillsborough County School Board members are hoping for clarification to avoid potential lawsuits.

During a workshop Tuesday addressing library books, the board said they hoped to get additional guidance on how to interpret terms in new laws, such as “sexually explicit,” according to the Tampa Bay Times.

The clarification is needed, they said, to avoid lawsuits over alleged inappropriate books or embarrassment for removing books that didn’t need to be removed.
