Winner and loser of the week: USF nabs long-sought accolade, as Tampa sweats it out

The University of South Florida was accepted into the Association of American Universities, a group of 71 leading research institutions in the U.S. and Canada.

It’s the first public university in Florida to be added in nearly 40 years, and the school has been seeking it for 15 years.

But things are not so hot … er, actually they are, in Tampa. A report from USAfacts.org, citing Environmental Protection Agency data, shows Tampa had the nation’s biggest spike in heatwave frequency, which is two or more days with “abnormally and uncomfortably hot” conditions outside “historical averages” for the area.
