When Saritza Sanchez evacuated from Puerto Rico to Florida during Hurricane Maria last year, she and her husband refused to abandon their five dogs. So her husband stayed, despite a lack of water or electricity, as she moved to Tampa to pursue job opportunities.
But now, Saritza has her dogs back, thanks to a partnership of Puerto Rico Animal Unite, SPCA Tampa Bay and other animal welfare organizations. In April, 35 dogs and cats – including the Sanchez dogs – were flown here and reunited with their owners. Happily, the Sanchez family is also back together: Saritza’s husband is now here, too.
