A U.S. Navy sailor with roots in Tampa played a key role during a flag lowering ceremony aboard USS Hershel Williams earlier this month.
Boatswain’s Mate 3rd Class Devin Parido folded the United States flag in honor of the ship’s namesake, Hershel “Woody” Williams, who died on June 29 at the age of 98.
Williams earned a Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The USS Hershel Williams is rotationally deployed to the U.S. Naval Forces Africa area of operations, employed by U.S. Sixth Fleet, to defend U.S., allied and partner interests.
