When Nelson Poynter was publisher of the then-St. Petersburg Times, he came to work every day wearing a bowtie.
The Poynter Institute, which Nelson founded, honors this legacy every year with the Bowtie Ball. The third Bowtie Ball is Nov. 4 at the Hilton Carillon in St. Petersburg,
During each ball, Poynter awards a legendary journalist with the Poynter Medal of Lifetime Achievement. Earlier balls recognized nightly news anchors Bob Schieffer and Tom Brokaw. This year Poynter will bestow the medal on PBS NewsHour anchor Judy Woodruff.
Money raised supports Poynter’s work of training journalists in service of democracy.
