The Rays traded Austin Meadows, one of their most potent offensive weapons, to Detroit for minor-league infielder Isaac Paredes and a competitive balance round B pick in the 2022 draft.
The real reason for the trade, however, was to clear a spot for outfielder Josh Lowe, one of Tampa Bay’s top prospects with his combination of speed and power.
Lowe also is considered a far superior defensive player than Meadows.
Still, they have to replace Meadows’ 27 homers and career-high 106 RBI from last season. Paredes can play second, third, and shortstop. He will start the season at Triple-A Durham.
