Rachel Balkovec made history this week when the New York Yankees announced her promotion to manage the minor league Tampa Tarpons – becoming the first woman to lead an affiliated professional baseball team.
The Yankees hired Balkovec in 2019 as a hitting coach in the organization’s minor league system, which was groundbreaking at the time, as she became the first full-time female hitting instructor affiliated with Major League Baseball. Her first pro-ball position was for the St. Louis Cardinals as a minor league strength and conditioning coach in 2012.
Balkovec will manage the Tarpons’ 2022 season, which starts in April.
