Brad Snyder, a Navy veteran who was blinded back in 2011 during combat in Afghanistan, has won the gold medal in the men’s triathlon at the Paralympics in Tokyo.

Snyder is a native of St. Petersburg and now lives in Baltimore.

Snyder and guide Greg Billington, a 2016 Olympian, dominated the race and finished in 1 hour, 1 minute, 16 seconds, nearly a minute ahead of the second-place finisher.

The event consisted of running, swimming and cycling.

Snyder concentrated only on swimming and won multiple medals, including gold at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, before switching to the triathlon in 2018.
