Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts honored Tampa Bay native Janet Echelman for her artistic achievements on Oct. 20. Much of her success is attributed to her creativity and resiliency in adversity.
In 1997, Echelman planned to give painting exhibitions in India, however, her paints were lost in transit. While watching local fishermen bundling their nets, she was inspired to try a new approach to sculpture.
She collaborated with the fishermen to create netted sculptures, and discovered that the nets’ delicate surfaces changed with the wind. It’s led to international success, with installations in over 37 cities worldwide.
