USF football opens play in the American Athletic Conference on Saturday when the Bulls travel to SMU.
The Bulls are 1-3 after a 35-27 loss last weekend to BYU — ranked No. 15. South Florida fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter but outscored the Cougars the rest of the way.
They’ll need a faster start against the 4-0 Mustangs, but hope to capitalize on the momentum provided by freshman quarterback Timmy McClain, who made his first start at BYU.
McClain showed poise before a loud and hostile crowd, leading USF on scoring drives of 69, 62, 75, 54 and 94 yards.
