Speaking at an NAACP political forum Monday night, former Sen. Janet Cruz attacked her opponent for Tampa City Council, Lynn Hurtak, accusing her of being anti-gay.
“I don’t know what Hurt’s problem is with my daughter and the Mayor,” Cruz said, before asking, “Do you have a problem with gay people?”
Her comment came after Hurtak had referenced Cruz’s family relationships, saying she would not “have the luxury of sitting every single week with my daughter-in-law,” according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Cruz’s daughter, Ana Cruz, is the long-time partner of Mayor Jane Castor.
The Tampa Municipal Election is March 7.
