Winner and Loser of the week in Tampa Bay politics

This week’s winner in Tampa Bay politics is easy. With an already massive campaign war chest, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor is setting the stage for a sleepy 2023. Her opponents are not only behind, they haven’t even really started.

This week’s loser is more nuanced. Though he represents parts of Sarasota, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan’s loss for the House Ways and Means Committee chairmanship is a blow to the broader region and a snub to the longtime lawmaker who was the senior-most Republican on the committee.

The Tampa Bay region would have been in prime position for new federal funding.
