At the southern edge of Key West, at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, attendees will find an historical bonanza – the world’s largest Civil War armaments cache – as well as a natural setting worthy of the Great Florida Birding Trail.
Strolling through the fort, named for the country’s 12th President, past cannon and gun ports, brings history alive. Re-enactors conduct historic demonstrations every third weekend each month and one learns of the fort’s role in the Civil War and the Spanish-American War.
The southern end of the park boasts a beach with opportunities for picnicking, swimming, snorkeling, paddling and fishing.
