Southeast Florida’s largest state park is a 10,500-acre swath along the intercoastal Hobe Sound, just north of Jupiter, that invites exploring by land or water 16 unique ecosystems: coastal sand hills, upland lakes and scrub forests as well as the Loxahatchee River.
The Jonathan Dickinson State Park was named for a Quaker who was shipwrecked and captured by the Jobe (Hoe-Bay) peoples. The tribe disappeared soon after his release.
The area has been home to a top-secret radar training school and the home of the “Wildman of the Loxahatchee” who opened a roadside attraction, “Trapper’s Jungle Gardens and Wildlife Zoo.”
