Ray Charles’ St. Pete connection

by
Roy Peter Clark

Well-known writing coach Roy Peter Clark of the Poynter Institute is known as many things – teacher, author, musician – and no matter what he does, he pours his heart into it.

His latest project has been no exception. Clark was the driving force behind the City of St. Petersburg naming Feb. 15 as “Ray Charles Day” in honor of the legendary singer/songwriter.

Why Ray Charles? Because of his 1950 song “St. Pete Florida Blues,” about a girl Charles met from Tampa. (Her hometown was switched to “St. Pete” for the song.)
