Scalloping season is back

Scalloping is a quintessential summer activity in west-central Florida, as locals flock north to Levy, Citrus and Hernando counties to pluck the sweet mollusks from the seagrass.

This year, locals don’t need to travel as far. A trial scallop season runs July 20-29 in the waters of the Anclote River in north Pinellas County.

If those dates don’t work, regular scallop season runs through Sept. 24 for such local spots as Cedar Key, Crystal River and Homosassa. You need a saltwater fishing license to scallop. To get the help of an expert, consider a scalloping charter and guide.
