U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor has secured $2 million for Hillsborough County Schools to fund its Building Tampa’s Tomorrow: Workforce Development Initiative, including building construction academy Bowers/Whitley and the medical academy at D.W. Waters.
The funding will cover two phases – training students in high-demand fields and purchasing new equipment for solar roof installation and HVAC, and modernizing training in fields such as electrical wiring.
The program aims to create a talent pipeline and opportunities for underrepresented youth in high-demand skilled trades.
The project is one of 13 grants Castor secured this year totaling $14 million for Tampa Bay area communities.
