On Thursday, Clearwater’s City Council is expected to pass the second reading of a measure banning smoking on city beaches and parks. Ocean Conservancy says cigarette butts are made of tightly packed plastic fibers that erode into smaller bits and accumulate in fish and birds, negatively impacting their health.
“We’re thrilled to see Clearwater take this significant step – acknowledging that our beaches are not only places of leisure, but also delicate ecosystems that deserve our utmost protection,” said Ocean Conservancy’s J.P. Brooker.
Clearwater will join cities like St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Jacksonville and others that have already enacted similar bans.
