Winner & Loser of the Week: Guido Maniscalco bucks drama while higher education takes a hit

After months of what seemed like non-stop drama on Tampa City Council, Councilmember Guido Maniscalco shifted the tide, earning his colleagues’ nod as the new board chair.

The vote was unanimous.

Not so smooth are things at Florida’s colleges and universities, where diversity, equity and inclusion programs have now been gutted thanks to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ recent bill-signing.

College execs fear an exodus of talent and, at St. Petersburg College, they’re facing additional challenges. Its faculty union filed a complaint alleging the school excluded its members from raises others received and is refusing to bargain after 13 months of negotiations.
