The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $39.7 million to the city of Tampa and Hillsborough County for road safety enhancements.

That includes $20 million for Tampa for its “T-SAFE: Tampa—Systemic Applications for Equity” initiative. The funding will be used to install mid-block pedestrian crosswalks, flashing beacons, traffic signal visibility and more.

Hillsborough will receive $19.7 million for its equitable transportation safety programs, which emphasize data use. Funding will be used to install curbs, bike lanes and sidewalks at 22 locations.

The area is one of the most deadly in the nation, with 219 traffic fatalities in Hillsborough in 2022.
