Civil Rights landmark offers coastal sanctuary from urban bustle

The Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, located south of Port Everglades in Dania Beach, is the last stretch of undeveloped coastal ecosystem in Broward County, not far from a bustling city.

This park at 6503 N. Ocean Dr. was once the designated “colored beach.” Today it bears the name of the two Civil Rights activists who led the “wade-in” protests desegregating the Whites-only beaches on Las Olas.

The park has a full complement of activities, including a boat ramp. Birdwatchers see not only those attracted to the park’s stretch of sand, but also the park’s tropical hardwood hammock.
