ZooTampa at Lowry Park just welcomed the births of an Okapi calf and four red wolf pups – a milestone for the zoo and a good sign for two vulnerable species.
Okapis, the only living relative of the giraffe, face a declining population from hunting. The red wolf pups are among the most critically endangered wolf species in the world, with fewer than 200 left.
The Okapi calf will eventually move to a new home, as part of the Species Survival Plan, which helps certain endangered species grow in number. Meanwhile, the wolf pups will be raised and live at ZooTampa.
