Be the savviest person at the 4th of July barbecue

The 4th of July could have been the 2nd of July. But much to future President John Adams’ dismay, it got the shaft. July 2 was the day the Second Continental Congress voted to formally separate from Great Britain.

Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail Adams, “The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”

Ouch.
