Gulfport’s Peter Hargitai of Hungary was Tampa Bay’s first poet laureate in 2015, a role championed by the Gulfport Public Library’s Circle of Friends. He joined three other laureates from Hillsborough County and St. Petersburg in this artist-friendly area.
Hargitai’s poems were published in ” Sixty Years of American Poetry ” and he won the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Prize in 2009. His role included composing poems for city events and public readings. His goal is to make poetry more accessible, and he did just that at his inaugural reading a la rock concert, replete with a packed room and encores.
