The National Archives has launched a Citizen Archivist program, enlisting virtual volunteers to improve the accessibility of its records.
Archives staff curate missions asking remote volunteers to contribute on topics as varied as Marine Corps activities in World War II and Korea, the Pentagon Papers and applications from former Confederate officials seeking pardons and amnesty from President Johnson after the Civil War.
Volunteers are asked to tag and transcribe records to make them more searchable and add their comments to tell other users about related records or what they might expect to find in an item, file unit or series.
