WUSF, Tampa Bay History Center present ‘Chitlin Circuit’ remembering Black-owned jazz clubs

by The 100 Companies

During segregation, Black-owned jazz clubs and bars known as the “Chitlin’ Circuit” emerged across the American South. These dance halls hosted musicians who ultimately became global jazz icons. From the 1930s to the 1960s, these clubs thrived in an industry dominated by white-owned music-booking firms and venues.

On Feb. 19 from 6:30-8 p.m., WUSF presents an event exploring the history of this thriving music scene. NPR’s Eric Deggans will lead the discussion. The event is free and accessible in-person at the TECO Hall at the History Center, and streamed live, thanks to funding from the Hillsborough County Arts Council.
