Located in an old family cemetery outside the small town of Warrenton in northeastern North Carolina stands an 11-foot obelisk that marks another Civil War tragedy.
The obelisk pays tribute to Annie Carter Lee, who died in Warren County in October 1862 from typhoid fever at the age of 23. Annie was the second (some say favorite) daughter of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, who sent his family to North Carolina after Federal troops occupied the family home in Arlington, Virginia.
Annie was buried in North Carolina (remains were later moved to a family crypt) because of the war.
