Hillsborough lawmakers advance Superintendent, County Commission proposals, sending them to Tallahassee

by The 100 Companies

Hillsborough County lawmakers voted to advance a proposal to make the School Superintendent an elected and partisan office and to expand the County Commission to nine single-member districts.

The measures now head to the Legislature for consideration. If lawmakers sign off on the Superintendent and County Commission charter reform proposals, Hillsborough voters will decide whether to adopt the changes in 2026.

House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell opposed both.

Rep. Michele Rayner was absent, but previously called the school superintendent effort a partisan power grab.

On Commission seats, Rep. Michael Owen said single-member districts would give residents closer access to their Commissioners.
