Denver’s Oldest Restaurant

by

The Buckhorn Exchange is Denver’s oldest eatery and the first Colorado establishment to be granted a liquor license. Founded in 1893, the restaurant was originally located across from the Rio Grande Railroad yards, and workers who exchanged their paychecks for gold received a free lunch and one beer.

It continues to serve “Old West fare,” including steaks of beef, bison and elk, along with Colorado lamb, Cornish game hens and quail. On our visit, the chef’s special provided a taste of two wild game meats: elk and buffalo. Both lean meats are mild in flavor and tender when expertly prepared.
