Tampa’s Aric Almirola snapped a 98-race winless streak on the NASCAR circuit by winning the rain-shortened Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 race at Loudon, New Hampshire.
He also won something bigger: a spot in NASCAR’s 16-driver playoffs.
Both achievements didn’t seem likely before the race. Almirola was far behind in the playoff chase, but he caught a break when weather conditions intervened.
The race was delayed nearly two hours by rain. With darkness falling, NASCAR declared the race over with eight laps remaining in its scheduled 301 laps, handing Almirola the win.
It was the third victory in Almirola’s 374-race career.
