Affordable housing downtown? Yes, it’s possible

Affordable housing is harder and harder to find in downtowns as older residences are replaced with condos and luxury apartments.

In response, more cities are encouraging affordable housing developers to do projects with creative funding like Low Income Housing Tax Credits.

One example is Delmar 745, being built in downtown St. Petersburg by developer McCormack Baron Salazar. Its 65 apartments will have energy-efficient appliances, bicycle spaces, balconies and shared amenities like a computer room and fitness center.

“Affordable housing is the foundation for helping families stabilize,” Sandra Seals of McCormack Baron Salazar said in a St. Pete Catalyst interview.
