Restoring the Bay

by

Tampa Bay covers 2,700 square miles of open water and watershed, and as development has increased, its wetlands have suffered. One answer? Plant seagrass.

In a major step forward in this effort, Tampa Bay Watch, a nonprofit that protects and restores area estuaries, recently received $10,000 from the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay for its “Bay Grasses In Classes” program.

Students plant and harvest salt marsh grasses in their schools’ wetlands nurseries to replant. The program has planted nearly 295,000 plugs, helping restore over 150 acres of habitat since 1995.
