Tampa’s Favorite Sandwich Never Disappoints

by

The Cuban sandwich has humble origins. Called the “mixto” in Cuba, it was simply leftovers stuffed between slices of bread.

Once it made its way to Ybor City, the mixto evolved with the influence of Cuban, Spanish and Italian immigrants who came for cigar factory jobs in the 1880s. The traditional Cuban sandwich is made with ham, mojo roast pork, salami, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard pressed between Cuban bread.

In 2012, it was named Tampa’s signature sandwich. Find out who makes the best Cuban sandwich at the Cuban Sandwich Festival in Ybor City’s Centennial Park on Sunday, April 2.
