Author’s success tip: ‘Deep Work’

by
Lisa Unger

Local author Lisa Unger is riding a career high. She recently released her 16th book, “Under My Skin,” and “In the Blood” is optioned for TV.

How does the New York Times best-selling writer and mother keep creative juices flowing, meet deadlines and manage her brand?

She practices the “Deep Work” concept promoted by author Cal Newport, which calls for two- to four-hour blocks of uninterrupted work per day.

Unger writes at 5 a.m., does her morning mom routine, then returns to “deep work” when school starts. “Shallow work,” like email, is done after 2 p.m.
